Position and route

The existing Vessel Tracking feed provides last-received AIS, not guaranteed live position. No planned waypoints are present in that feed. Current COG / SOG extrapolation starts at the last AIS timestamp and is only a what-if scenario. It does not avoid land, traffic schemes or restricted areas. The system never generates a navigable route.

For planned-route mode, the first waypoint is the last AIS position. After the final waypoint the scenario stays there. Imported routes stay in this browser; only sampling coordinates go to the weather service.

Speed and current

AIS SOG already includes the effect of current. To avoid counting it twice, the illustrative speed column uses SOG × (1 − selected loss) + future along-route current − the initial along-route current. This is a sensitivity scenario, not a vessel performance prediction. No numerical scenario is shown without both current values. Encounter times use reference SOG, not this scenario; there is no corrected ETA.

A defensible weather speed-loss forecast needs vessel speed/power curves, loading, draft, heading and engine settings. These are not connected.

Data and attention thresholds

Weather: MET Norway (CC BY 4.0). Waves and currents: EU Copernicus Marine Service (Météo-France waves and SMOC total surface currents). Weather symbols are mapped to display categories; these are not official WMO warnings. Wind/wave directions are FROM; current direction is TO. Lower attention is not an all-clear. Elevated: wind ≥22 kn, gust ≥28 kn, waves ≥2.5 m or visibility below 2 NM. High: wind ≥34 kn, gust ≥40 kn, waves ≥4 m or thunderstorm code. These are dashboard attention bands, not official warnings or vessel operating limits.

Encounters are sampled every 6 hours. MET Norway wind vectors and Copernicus 3-hour wave height/period/direction are interpolated in time only between available model times. SMOC hourly total surface currents include circulation, tides and wave drift; they are not draft-averaged vessel currents. Numerical surface currents have limited coastal accuracy. Gusts are not available everywhere and visibility is not supplied. Lower attention therefore refers only to available parameters. Real data coverage is checked through +120 hours; missing values remain blank.
